Paniolo Night BBQ
Hawaiian cowboys (Na Paniolo) have played an important role historically and still today on Hawaii’s Big Island. There were paniolo working the open range here on the island before there were cowboys in America’s West. With that in mind, Kona Village Resort shares a bit of paniolo culture with guests.

Each Tuesday evening “Paniolo Night” celebrates the rich culture and heritage of Hawaiian cowboys with great food and entertainment. The tasty menu includes grilled steak, chicken, fresh island fish, beans slow-cooked over an open fire, corn on the cob, salads, desserts and for a nominal extra fee, fresh Kehaole grilled lobster.

Live entertainment features Hawaii’s unique slack-key music and décor befits the evening’s theme. Hardworking Paniolo are on hand to talk story with guests, answer questions and share knowledge and lore about their intriguing lifestyle.
Yee-ha! Round up the clan for Paniolo Night at Kona Village.

‘Aha‘aina
Each Wednesday and Friday, Kona Village’s aha`aina (feast, or lu‘au) honors old traditions while adopting decidedly upbeat formats.

On Wednesday Hula Mana brings the experience alive with the resort’s legendary ‘Aha‘aina lu‘au. On Friday Savai‘i, Origins of Polynesia provides guests with a vibrant South Pacific lu‘au experience.

Immerse yourself in an authentic cultural journey surrounded by ancient Hawaiian fish ponds. The evening begins with the unveiling of traditionally prepared foods in the imu (Hawaiian earthen oven) or the umu (Polynesian earthen oven). A sumptuous buffet showcases the heritage foods of such as kalua pig, lomi lomi salmon and poi alongside modern favorites such as fresh island fish, tasty chicken and tropical fruits. Enjoy a mai tai or other refreshing libation.

Then it is showtime! Savai‘i includes the Maori songs of New Zealand and unique to New Zealand poi ball dance, the Samoan fire dance, and the hip-shaking Tahitian tamure.
Implements, chants and dance during Friday’s Hula Mana reminisce about “Boat Days” of Honolulu, the influence of all of Polynesia in Hawai‘i and the island’s Paniolo (cowboys).

Regardless of the evening, each aha`aina sparkles with energy and the vivacious talent of the performers in an unparalleled open-air setting.
